the chef/owner of Akatsuki was renewing the restaurant, a local Gardena, CA spot for the past 30 years. wanting to bridge the gap between the loyal customers in the Japanese community and the younger generation, the owner asked for a stencil art perspective on traditional Japanese themes.

to create a theme for the restaurant, we decided on spring time in japan featuring a red Mt. Fuji as it appears at sun set during the right time of year. spring is a time for renewal and enjoying the brief beauty of cherry blossoms. to paint this scene at the main entrance brings a fresh air to this established restaurant.
