embroidered yarn and concrete

the theme for this piece is focused on the collective action required to advance feminism, so I was nervous about applying my regular technique to comment on a movement of which I'm removed as I am. what place do I have to lend a voice necessarily anyways?

after speaking with close family and friends, I decided that this work required me to learn an entirely new process to replicate the process of the feminist movement. as with any collective movement, the consolidation of individuals and individual actions creates the momentum to move forward. so I took to embroidering for the first time in my life. each movement of the needle replicated those individuals and actions that add to the tapestry of feminist history and progress.

the "traditionally" feminine practice of embroidery also doubles in the message as I worked on developing this process for myself, despite centuries of others perfecting the craft. it required dedication and time in a new way that gave me time to reflect on the work.

to symbolize the patriarchy, I chose another new medium: concrete. with a strong compressive force resistance, concrete matches the entrenchment of the patriarchy, but water can easily subvert this strength through penetration, erosion, and division.
